View Full Version : should I get an iPhone?

I really want to get a touch screen phone, but none of the ones that Verizon offer really seem that friendly, as far as the interface is concerned. My contract is up, and I'm thinking about switching to Cingular to get the iPhone, it seems really easy to use and has a ton of awesome features.
For those of you that have them, would you buy it again if you had the chance or would you get something different? thanks

I can do anything on this fucking thing. I'm on it right now :D.

so whats the benefit of the iphone over a normal phone without internet and games and shit?
i think it'll be awesome for sean since he's in a touring band but i guess i don't really see the appeal of having the internet with you at all times. maybe i'm just a prude.

it's not the games, the interface on the touch screen blackberries and LG phones for verizon are annoying as all get go. I'm also looking for another service, even if it's not Cingular

Look at the G1 on Tmobile. Also the G2 should be coming out in the summer which will be all touch. Android is nice.

i mean don't get my wrong, i love the iphone interface. I have a touch and my ex has an iphone.
Honestly, I think it's a good investment for you. It beats having to lug a laptop around on tour, plus you can use the internet in the van.
The features just don't seem necessary for the layman. An unnecessary $100+ a month

Just tons of things you can do from your phone/iPod without having to go to a computer. There is seriously an app for everything, and the phone is just super pretty. Haha
If you can afford it, get it. People can nit-pick it and say they don't like minor things (not good for picture messaging, can't record video unless you jailbreak it, etc.), but none of that really matters to me. I've had the phone for probably 6 months now and I can't really imagine going back to anything else.

how many minutes do you get for 90 a month?
and yeah, I really like the idea of being able to do booking and management stuff, which my current phone won't really let me do.

To Ryan: having the internet at all times is awesome, especially when you have a desire to google/wikipedia a lot. It's also nice for getting directions on the go, finding out weather, proving people wrong (back to google/wiki), theboreds during slow times... et cetera.
I only have a BB Pearl, and I would never want anything with less powar than this baby.
ANYWAY, Sean, I'd love to have a hipster iPhone. I just too po' and haven't even had mine for a year yet. Have fun with it!

and i pay for 450 mins, but i always end up with a ton of rollovers.
i dont like talking on the phone much though.

It's such a pain in the ass to have to find free wifi if I ever need it. Also, checking my usual web-based items (Twitter, IM, Band's MySpace) is a chore when you're out and about.
I'd say get an iPhone because it's one of the best mobile platforms out there. If having AT&T is such a dealbreaker, opt for a Verizon network phone like a BlackBerry or take a gamble at the new and really nice looking Palm phones coming to Sprint.

ipod touch is good for students because of the wifi access. it's also good to use in coffee shops and other places, but again, because wifi isn't everywhere, it's a little tough if what you're looking to do is surf the web and whatnot.
sean, just make sure that the at&t coverage in your area is generally strong. when i first signed up with at&t, my service was crap because of the area i lived in. now that i'm in huntington, it's no big deal and i get full bars almost everywhere, but just be sure that you'll be okay with the coverage you'll get where you are.

i totally agree, and even when i do get an iPhone, i'll still have my music on a separate iPod. 16 gigs isn't enough for me, i need moar room!

The touch screen kind of bugs out sometimes and there have been occassions when i wanted to throw my iphone across the room. Ironically im typing this on my phone roght now.

Not being able to text pictures is super fucking annoying. I wasn't able to with my Pearl at first, but then they upgraded the OS and now I can. Having to e-mail isn't the same because then you cannot get the picture to the person's phone unless they have e-mail set up on it.
I prefer my iTouch + Blackberry combo. I love the internet on the iPhone, but I'm done with touchscreen keyboards. I had the Storm for a while and returned it. I knew how to use the phone and didn't have any problems with it, but I just hate typing on touchscreens. I'm an extremely fast typer (see the typing thread :) ), and there's no way to reach my max speed without a keyboard.
The iPhone would be cool if it could 1) run multiple apps at once 2) send picture messages 3) had copy/paste 4) had a keyboard.

correct me if I am wrong, but I thought pictures messages were basically emails. couldn't you email it to their phone as 555555555@tmobile.com or something like that..... Then I guess you would need to know the carrier for your friends and I don't pay attention to that stuff.
Vito, I agree, I love my BB+iPod combo, I just think its better this way.

Im in the same situation. I have verizon and my contracts up. I was thinking about getting a black berry storm but would rather switch service and get an iphone.
Does anyone have the storm? If so could you explain to me if it sucks or not.

no.
If you've never had a blackberry before I really don't recommend the Storm. Its OS is still be fine-tuned, and unless you know how to go in and free up memory and keep it running well, I doubt you'll be happy with it.

My girlfriend has had it since the release and loves it. I haven't heard a single complaint from her. The only issue she had was a couple of weeks ago it wasn't alerting her of calls and they'd go to voicemail (where they were ringing as usual on the sender end and her signal was fine). The "problem" was that the BB Storm had been working so flawlessly for so long that the memory had become full and it just needed a reset, which had never been done on it because it had worked so well and the battery had never died.
My brother is a suit for Verizon and says the only consistent issue that users have with the Storm is that it can feel sluggish between programs. It just doesn't have all of the flashy crap that the iPhone has to distract you from load times, etc. Every phone carrying this much software will have some load time involved.

you know I'm smarter than that dude, the reason I want to switch providers is that I have a $400 deposit tied up in my Verizon account (because I have no credit) and if I switch to Cingular and get an iPhone I'll walk away with two hundred bucks.
plus, my current phone plan runs me about $78 a month, and I need internet....so $90 really isn't that bad at all.
but thank you :)
I'm also thinking about the storm, but I played with one at the Verizon store last night and the interface just pissed me off, straight up.

i just have an ipod with a lot of space that i put all of my music on.
i put all my new stuff on the iphone, and rotate.
i get a better listen rate going when i do this, and its extremely organized and convenient.
im just sayin that if you have an ipod already its still ok to have the iphone as well.
it has advantages.

Well. My iPhone, which was recently stolen, was great. I loved it, and now I'm saving up for another one..
There's so much you can do on it. These are the key things for me... I use it a lot for work BTW..
-Great service where ever I am..
-Easy to use interface.
-Email (especially because it reads .PDF and other types of files)
-keeps me organized.
-Looks Great.
-GPS included with the data package
-Decent browser.
-An application for pretty much anything..
-iPod!
-YouTube!
I just love it.. I can not picture myself using anything else either..
-GxZ
Sprint has the Palm Pre coming out soon too which you might want to check out. That looks like it's going to be a kickass phone.

my verizon plan is up in two months as well. just going to stick with a basic crappy little phone. no need for me to have internet on it, even though the iphone is way sexy, its just not worth the money for internet. i'm not that addicted.

YES do it... I was in the same position over xmas and was really hesitiant going from a normal phone to an iphone with a higher monthly price but believe me it was definietely worth it....it's like having a laptop in your pocket at all times.
No other phone has the app store with an app for just about anything you can think of...which if your paying this much a month I think you should have nothing less. I looked at the storm and other verizon phones as well and nothing was like the iphone.
It's going to be hard to ever consider buying a phone other than the iphone after owning it! lol
for 90 a month
i have 1500 text
I pay the same but only get 200 texts per month....how are you getting 1500? I pay 5 bucks extra for the 200 and have the basic plan of 450 minutes a month

It might not make a difference but the Storm can't type as fast as the iphone watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WkZTtr5ibI&feature=related (around 5:40)
it can't handle rapid keystrokes
Trust me, I could've out typed any iPhone user with my Storm. I just don't like not being able to do it without looking on a consistent basis. I loosened the screws for my Storm screen, so it was a lot more 'clickable.' I couldn't click it any faster than it would let me anyway.

a customer once put it to me this way:
he'd had an iPhone, but switched to a blackberry.
shortly after, he switched back to the iPhone.
he said the difference was that with the iPhone, you have a computer that is also a phone. with a blackberry, you have a phone that also browses the web.
if your primary use will be talk-time, you may want to consider other options, but if you will mainly be using your phone for calendars, contacts, email, and web options, then you most definitely should consider the iPhone.

I was just looking at some of the features OS 3.0 is going to have. It's definitely adding some key features that it was missing. Copy/paste, sending pictures via mms, typing texts in landscape (why was this not in there in the first place?), etc.

I'd have to agree.
I got a Motorola Q9c as a gift about a year ago, I needed a new phone and GPS, so my parents gave me this.
I use it for everything. Skyfire is awesome. I have a couple e-mail accounts running on it, and calendars. I used as an mp3 player before I got my Archos.
I haven't had any problems with it at all. I'd rather keep this than get an iPhone. I hhhaaaaatttteeeeee touch screens. My Archos is tough enough, I couldn't deal with that on a phone.

totally worth it if you can afford the added cost. I run almost every thing off of mine. Its a great phone, and apps just keep coming out expanding the uses for it. They still dont have a decent live tv stream app yet, but ill live
I wish they'd add multi-tasking. The only thing it's really lacking, besides a physical keyboard.

Id tell you though that one can really warm up to the touch screen. ive gotten to the point where i can type faster on a touch screen then i can with a keypad. its almost gotten to the point where i want all my future electronics to have a touch screen.
