I'm going off to college next year and I need a new laptop. I'm not sure if I should buy a Mac or an Alienware. It's between those two definately. What do you all think? At max, I can spend about $2,000.
If you have that much to spend, I say Macbook Pro all the way. Alienware hasn't been good for a long, long time in my opinion. I'm sure many people would back me up there.
Depends on what are you are planning to do with it.
School work?
Gaming?
Music?
Photoshop?
All of the above?
If you are stuck between Alienware and Mac, go Mac. Alienware is overpriced for what it is.

Those are two completely different companies that serve completely different purposes.

Macbooks are decently priced. Macbook Pros are a lot higher but I believe they're worth it if you keep it for 4 years. PC laptops usually don't last that long and if they do, look like they're almost gonna die.

Yeah but Macs are Macs you can't get a Mac equivalent.
Alienware laptops are just PCs. Overpriced at that, which is what I meant.
Does that make any sense? Sorry it makes sense in my head, I suck at getting my thoughts on paper.

falcon-nw.
why would you compare a mac vs an alienware? are you just trying to pit expensive laptop vs expensive laptop? or are you actually buying it for a functional reason?
audio/video editting, get the mac. care more about aesthetics than value? get the mac.
don't wanna learn a new os? want to game? dont want to have to bootcamp your computer with a copy of windows? stick with a mid-priced laptop.

Buy an abacus.

I have a 20" imac in my bedroom that I got ridiculously cheap. The only thing I like about it is the screen blows away my laptop. Other than occasional movie watching, I don't use it - typically stream to my 50" pioneer plasma anyway. OSX is a chore to learn, in my opinion. in fact, that's our number one complaint about them at work too.

A chore? Maybe it has a different learning curve but it definitely isn't a chore. Try using Gentoo Linux or something.
The only reason you say that, Kevin, is because I'm guessing you've used Windows for as long as you've ever used a computer. It is different, but its GUI is far more standardized and consistent than Windows, and in my opinion, easier to use. There's a reason Macs are used in creative industries on such a large scale. They get out of the way and let you do what you need to do.
Yeah, it sounds fanboy-ish, but I used to hate Macs too until I tried one. Been using my Macbook for over 2 years and I'll never switch back.
You can get a decent PC for pretty cheap, but I just promised myself that I would never buy another PC until I get my Mac. A bunch of my friends have them, and being a musician, Garageband is worth it all by itself. Mac just feels more versatile to me. I can't think of one thing I would want to do on a computer that I couldn't do on a Mac. Everyone has their own opinion though.
That being said, if you do go PC, for the love of god, stay away from Alienware. You could save a butt-load of money for pretty much the same thing.

maybe it's frustrating for a week or two, but once you get over the hump it's intuitive just like windows is once you learn it. I've never heard someone say "yeah, I couldn't learn how to use OSX so I had to go back to a PC."

Yeah, there were about 2 days where I sat with my Mac thinking "why the fuck did I buy this thing?!" After a week I was good though, and once I got MS Office on here I was happy.
if you're just going to be using it for school work though, why spend all that money, get a midpriced laptop like kevin said.
i had a compaq for 5 years and it ran great, the only reason i replaced it was because i wanted a new one. i actually ended up giving it to my younger brother and now he uses it.
be specific with what you plan on doing. macs are nice, but for the casual, average everyday user/student, it's not worth the money.

If you aren't gonna get a Mac, get a IBM Thinkpad or some business class laptop. They are more durable and last a lot longer.

get a mac, I have one. First of all, as everyone knows.. looks are more important than whats inside... so macs got you covered in the cool department, second of all, have I mentioned looking cool yet? Imagine yourself, hair blowing in the wind... as you type on your NEW macbook pro, in a coffeeshop surrounded by Megan Fox look alikes as you high-five your best buddy Triple-H. Can you get all of THAT with a PC? I dont think so. Let the bitches know, you aint no PC, youre a fuckin MAC(K).

I'm not sure as of yet. I've shopped around at apple.com and alienware.com and I've found things I like and don't like. With Alienware, you can customize to your hearts content. Apple, not so much. Also, Alienware has a 1080p Blu-Ray drive. I can't get that with apple. I think I might feel like a douche with that alien head thing on the back of my computer though.

Yeah, and OSX is easy as hell to learn. You can download Vista and XP emulators on the mac as well.

Having plenty of experience with both, I would say that if I could afford a macbook I would probably get one. If affordability is an issue, I'd stick with the lower price and flexability of a pc. But if money was no issue and I could find the specs I were looking for in a mac, I'd go with that.
Really, it's just personal preferance. If you've never used a mac, I don't know if I'd recommend jumping in and buying one (unless the place you're buying from has a fantastic return policy). Try before you buy. It's all just personal preferance.
Although for audio/video editing (like kev said), Mac is definitely the winner.
and I know this conversation has been beaten to death, but as long as there are people asking the question, the debate will live on.
